Families apply at the Habitat office. The Family Selection Committee chooses homeowners based on their level of need, their willingness to become partners in the program and their ability to repay the no-interest loan.
Habitat does not review applications like a bank. Most individuals chosen would not be approved for a bank loan. Also, Habitat provides a Family Nurture program which provides financial advice and helps the family become responsible citizens.
Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Enid Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with help from individuals, businesses, and organizations. The only government help received has been lots and grants donated from the City of Enid.
Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable, no-interest loans.
All donations are local, and those funds are put to work right here in Enid. Administrative fees are minimal; therefore more funds go to housing projects. The average cost of a Habitat house is $65,000.
Habitat is not a give-away program. As mentioned above, homeowners must make monthly mortgage payments on a no-interest loan. Prior to consideration for a Habitat home, the homeowner family must invest 300 hours of sweat equity on Habitat projects.
Enid Habitat for Humanity is a community-based Christian organization which strives to provide housing for low-income families in Enid.
This is accomplished through rehabilitation of existing structures, new construction, and interest-free loans.
Habitat’s goal is to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.
